As I continue to try and reduce plastic consumption in my life, I have tried many plastic-free shampoo bars. Unfortunately, some of the generic bars that I encountered from the health food store left my hair stripped, knotty, and straw-like.
I have since found many shampoo bars that are far superior to many of the liquid shampoos that I used to use. Erica Cabal, owner and stylist of Fresh Cut Salon in London agrees that the convenience and quality of some of the plastic-free shampoo options is a better choice than many of the drug store shampoos out there. “Many of the high-quality shampoo bars leave your hair feeling very soft and manageable”, says Cabal.
Plastic in our world continues to be a huge problem. Although plastic shampoo bottles are generally recyclable, many don’t end up being recycled and end up polluting landfills or oceans.
There is a huge push these days to avoid transporting products that contain water. Concentrated versions of products we use daily are making their way into the market more often. This not only helps reduce unnecessary packaging but also helps to avoid expending energy (fossil fuels) to transport and deliver products to your home.
Laundry detergents, beauty products, toothpaste, cleaning supplies, and shampoos are all examples of products that are making the switch to more condensed versions.

#1 Ethique
This was the first shampoo bar that I fell in love with and so I had to put it first on my list because I keep on returning to this company. Ethique is a company based in New Zealand that is making a huge global impact. They are a zero-waste, plastic-free company selling numerous body care products without having to ship large amounts of water.
How does it make my hair feel?
I used the Ethique Pinkalicious bar for normal hair and it works great! After thoroughly wetting your hair and rubbing the bar around the hair 5-6 times, you get this frothy lather as plentiful as any liquid shampoo. The rinse is easy and does not leave any residue on my hair. After washing, the scalp feels clean and healthy. This shampoo works great on its own or with a conditioner.

Ethique is a climate-positive company, meaning that they offset more carbon than they emit! That is a huge success for the industry!

Plastic Free Shampoo #2
Zero Waste MVMT
Founded in early 2019 by Zac and Janelle, Zero Waste MVMT not only offers plastic free-shampoo but also has other awesome products for zero waste living, such as dish soap blocks, beauty products, and starter kits to get you into a waste-free lifestyle. They make quality non-toxic products for every room in the house.
Their plastic-free shampoo comes in a bar format and is sold in a beautiful sturdy cardboard container. They offer a few different scents and compositions depending on your hair type.
How does it make my hair feel?
The smell of these bars is amazing! The Eucalyptus mint creates a tingling lather with just a few rubs of the bar on wet hair. It rinses out clean and tames curly hair very well. These bars leave your hair feeling soft and NOT straw-like or tangled. This is another great bar that can be used on its own or together with the conditioner.
Just a reminder, some people get confused between the shampoo and the conditioner, the shampoo is the larger bar!

Plastic Free Shampoo#3
Pacific Spirit
We were surprised to find such a great bar on Amazon! The company sells four formulations of the bar with different scents depending on hair type. The raspberry for normal hair has a great scent that is very pleasant. The composition of the shampoo is mild and will not sting your eyes, so it is great for children too.
How does it make my hair feel?
The bar lathers well enough and feels as though it is penetrating to the scalp. It leaves hair feeling clean and soft. It does not dry out the hair as some other bars do. The wheat starch in the bar is great for adding volume. The scent is light enough to enjoy while washing, but not strong enough to linger for the day. Conditioner is not a necessity with this shampoo, but feel free to use one if you would like.

Plastic Free Shampoo #4
Viori
Unboxing the Viori bar is actually quite a bit of fun! Watch this video here to learn more. The shampoo is very elegant with a cylindrical bamboo holder. It comes wrapped in ornately folded paper.
It’s a good idea to cure your bamboo holder with a thin layer of olive oil in order to maintain the wood. Viori is a great plastic-free shampoo bar for thinning hair, and most people using this bar can notice the difference in hair growth.
How does it make my hair feel?
After washing your hair with Viori, hair feels soft and very manageable. Brushing afterward is easy and does not tear the hair like other shampoos do. Using a Wet Brush from Amazon is recommended for optimal care, but not necessary. This will ensure even better hair growth and thickness.
This shampoo works well with the matching conditioner. The conditioner does not seem necessary since the bar provides a good deal of moisture. The Viori bars seem to control oily hair follicles very well, leaving hair smooth and keeping it cleaner for longer.
The scent is great but not overpowering.

Plastic Free Shampoo#5
Purifico
This plastic-free shampoo is a little different than the other bar formats that we have included in this list. Purifico is extremely hydrating and foams up very well. It is sold in pods that are made using water-soluble films made of polyvinyl alcohol (PVOH) that are colorless, odorless, non-toxic, and biodegradable—meaning, they dissolve in water and are then consumed by bacterial microorganisms.
The shampoo itself is sold in a strong paper cylinder, but the dispersal method for such pods is a sturdy plastic container which releases a pod from the bottom face of the cylinder. If you buy the 10-wash travel pack, you are truly getting a plastic-free product. We recommend you try the travel pack first to make sure you’re invested before buying the 24 pods & plastic dispenser. If/When you change brands, this is just one more plastic dispenser that goes to waste.
How does it make my hair feel?
The lather from these pods is plentiful…almost too much! The smell is amazing and lingers on the hair after washing. The fragrance is entirely natural and smells of a floral coconut vanilla. Hair feels very clean and tame afterward.
It seems as if this product is marketed towards men since there isn’t a conditioner to go with it and there is a 2-in-1 shampoo/body wash, something that is geared towards men. Purifico can easily be used for females too since the smell and effectiveness is great for both men and women.

Plastic Free Shampoo #6
The Naples Soap Company
This company has perfected the art of the shampoo bar, but still has some room to improve the small cylindrical container which is made out of plastic. The containers can easily be used for toiletries, hair ties, cotton balls, or pills after use. The bars are perfect for travel, and cater to every hair type with their long menu of shampoo bars. This shampoo is great as a gift or stocking stuffer and can be combined with the conditioner bars as well. The company specializes in products that are gentle and good for irritable skin conditions such as eczema.
How does it make my hair feel?
The Naples Soap Company shampoo bars sud up quickly and have a mild subtle scent. They make hair feel soft and leave no residue. The boyfriend bar has a musky/woodsy smell that can be used for men or as a unisex bar, while the Florida Fresh Scent is uplifting and vivid.
This bar lasts way longer than a traditional shampoo bottle! Around 75 washes, so you do get your money’s worth. One of the most popular scents is the vanilla sandalwood which often becomes a bathroom staple after trying it once. The shampoo bars do not strip the natural oils from your hair. The bars make hair feel light and bouncy, so conditioner is not really needed.

Plastic Free Shampoo #7
Everist
You can tell that the Everist company has put a lot of thought into the green footprint that they are making on the world. The plastic-free shampoo is delivered in a brown cardboard box without glossy paper, plastic tape or plastic wrap or packaging. Ink is plant-based and the concentrated shampoo is sold in a thick paste from an aluminum tube.
The only plastic is the cap, but even that can be sent back to the company for free in a little cloth bag to recycle it. There is no space wasted in the packaging, minimizing energy in transport.
The shampoo is sold in 100mL concentrated paste and lasts about 30 washes. You really only need half a dime to thoroughly sud up your hair and leave it super clean.
How does it make my hair feel?
The shampoo tube comes with a key to help squeeze the product out. The tubes are easily labeled so that you know that shampoo is 1, and conditioner is 2. There is not as much lather as I would have thought, but I think the trick is to add more water. It takes a few rinses to get it all out, but once the water runs clear, hair feels soft and there is no build-up or residue that accumulates. This shampoo pairs better with the conditioner, and leaves hair feeling nourished without static.

Leafinty
Leafinty shampoo bars are not only plastic free but are geared toward your perfect match. I took the Leafinty hair quick hair quiz before using it and found my perfect match which was actually a great choice for my hair! This company was very smart to differentiate the shape of the shampoo from the conditioner bars.
How does it make my hair feel?
The Blond bar does not leave purple stains on the shower or on your hands and leave hair feeling super nourished and much less brassy. The shampoo does not dry your hair out and creates tons of foam. The matching condition leaves hair soft and shiny. This plastic free shampoo has a great smell made from only natural essential oils. Both the shampoo and conditioner bars are pH balanced and contain only naturally derived ingredients.

Plastic Free Shampoo #10
Derma KB
We had to include this into on list because it is one of the only shampoo bars specifically designed as a Biofilm Shampoo for red and itchy scalp. Originally made in a liquid format, this company understood the advantages of shampoo bars and put their tried and true solution in a bar format, easy to travel to the gym and on airplanes.
This is a Canadian-based company formed in 2001 as a discovery and development company focused on technologies that prevent and disperse bacterial biofilms. The bar shampoo is sold in a four-pack, making it easy and convenient to keep in various places you may shower.
How does it make my hair feel?
People with dry and irritated scalp find this shampoo bar to be a lifesaver. Hair is left feeling shiny and healthy, and scalps begin to clear up in most cases after a few uses. The longer you leave it on the better it works, the company recommends 5 minutes.
There isn’t a very strong scent, which is great for those who suffer from skin and scalp disorders. DermaKB also helps with dandruff better than the medicated shampoos out there such as Head & Shoulders or Nizoral. It lathers well and combines well with the scalp detoxifier.

#12 HiBar
Although HiBar is marketed for all hair types, people with curly hair love how this shampoo makes their hair look and feel. HiBar shampoo bar lasts up to four months. The shape of the bar is unique and fits well in your hand, but makes it difficult to brew up lather rather quickly compared to other bars. All HiBars are wrapped in paper, making plastic obsolete and unnecessary. This is one of the only shampoo bars that offer a full refund if you don’t like it, so give it a try, you have nothing to lose!
How does it make my hair feel?
The shampoo bar is lighter in color than the conditioner, so that is one distinct way to tell which is which. The shape of the bar makes it easy to hold, but the downside is that it allows for less surface area when trying to later. It feels as though you have to keep rinsing it out a little more than other plastic-free shampoo options. It does have that squeaky clean effect, which is great for short hair but a little too much for long hair.
The smell is natural and is reminiscent of sour skittles. The shampoo bar seems to run out way faster than the conditioner, which seems like the general trend with shampoo bars.
Our curly hair friends seem to have the best results with HiBar. The bar seems to make their hair soft and shiny. In the future, I will order the curly bar for my straight hair to see if it makes a difference!

Bossman
People who use this plastic-free shampoo (mostly men) love the versatility of this bar. Used as shaving cream or as a shampoo, Bossman markets this bar as a 4-in-1 bar: for body, beard, hair, and shaving. There are two bars available, made with the same composition but different scents depending on what you prefer. It makes a great gift for the man in your life, especially if you’re trying to switch them over to more plastic-free options.
Bossman also has a wide array of beard products for men, only some of which are plastic-free.
How does it make my hair feel?
The bar foams up very well, it rinses well and does not leave additional residue behind. It feels as though it makes both hair and skin softer, while at the same time thickens hair. It feels great afterward and has a mild lingering smell. The bar is heavier than all others on the market, but it should be since it can replace so many other products.

Our Criteria for Evaluating
Plastic-Free Shampoo
In putting together this article, we wanted to compare apples to apples. To honestly evaluate every plastic-free shampoo, we found the following criteria most important:
#1 Is the packaging truly plastic-free?
To us, this means that the shipping package is mostly plastic free (minus shiny labels, and tape). This also means that the bar/shampoo is delivered in paper, cardboard, or metal.
#2 Does the shampoo contain Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS), Paraben, and Silicone Free?
SLS is a compound found in many personal care products. It is a surfactant, meaning that it lowers the surface tension in products to create foam and bubbles. It can be irritating to the skin, especially for those who suffer from atopic dermatitis (eczema), rosacea, and psoriasis. If you are looking for plastic-free shampoo, we feel it worth it to minimize this toxin and find a shampoo without SLS.
#3 How well does it lather?
We found it very hard to wash hair with shampoo that didn’t lather. Natural compounds such as sodium coco sulfate, made from coconut oil, can be used as a replacement for SLS.
#4 How long does it last?
The value of the bar was important too. Many plastic-free shampoo options are becoming more cost-effective, but they still may be higher priced than traditional liquid shampoo. Value for your money was also something we took into consideration.
#5 Are the scents natural?
This one was very important to us since there is a big difference between scents that are found in natural oils, such as peppermint, vanilla, and lemon and scents that are chemically processed in factories. Chemically made scents can contribute to respiratory problems, as well as other physical reactions and health-related problems.
#6 How does it make my hair feel?
This was the MOST important question for us since it came with lasting results. We wanted a plastic-free shampoo that made our hair feel as good, if not better than the traditional shampoo we find in a bottle.

FAQ
Should I make the switch to plastic-free shampoo?
There are so many great options these days for plastic-free shampoo that it is easy to switch without having to sacrifice quality. Shampoo is something that the majority of us use regularly. If we made a simple switch to a plastic free option, it would save 552 million per year of shampoo bottles taking 450 years to decompose! Making the switch will not only help save the planet, but it greatly reduces the space required to store bottles and the energy and effort required to transport bottles.
How to easily make the switch to plastic-free shampoo bars?
Buy one to start and test it out. Not all shampoo bars will work well with your hair, so it is a good idea to try another if the first one doesn’t work out. Hair stylist Cabal says that hair often needs a switch from time to time.
Once you finish with one brand, try another for added bounce, or extra volume. A clarifying bar will help to rid your hair of any buildup.
How to use a shampoo bar?
- Thoroughly wet hair.
- Rub the bar over your hair until you feel it is sudsy enough to lather.
- Continue rubbing hair with lather.
- Rinse.
How long do most bars last?
Most bars last from 50-75 washes. Reviewers say that many shampoo bars will last up to 3 months of regular use. The length of time that a bar will last depends on how much it weighs. Shampoo Bars can weigh from 25 grams to 100 grams. Most of them weigh between 55 grams and 70 grams.
What are the benefits of shampoo bars?
- Reduced waste in landfill
- Reduced weight for travel
- Liquid-free for air travel
- Easy to store taking up minimal space
- Saved energy costs from transporting unnecessary water
- Great products that are comparable to liquid shampoo
- Knowing you’re doing a great thing for the planet!
Is it worth it to make my own shampoo bar?
According to Royalty Soaps making your own shampoo bars is NOT worth it. In order to make a good quality shampoo bar that you will use and like, you require many expensive ingredients. The overall cost and time expenditure are not worth it unless you plan on selling your own shampoo bars. Due to many of the natural ingredients in shampoo bars, the oil will turn rancid if kept for years. It is better to pay the $10-$15 for a good shampoo bar that will last 3+ months.
What is the difference between a soap bar and a shampoo bar?
Companies today are coming up with more unique hair-friendly ways to make shampoo bars. While many of the ingredients may be the same, the proportions are different. Shampoo bars contain more oils to help coat the hair shaft and leave hair silkier and more manageable. Both bars often contain lye, fragrance, and some sort of fat or oil.

Great post and so helpful for the environment. I love shampoo bars, they’re great for when travelling.
It really bothers me to think about all the plastic waste and what happens to it. I love these options – so much helpful information about each product. Thanks for sharing!
I’m going to have to try some of these!
This is like going back to our roots…growing up in India we only had shampoo bars. About time for everyone to catch up and save the planet!
