The Case for Natural Deodorants
Regular deodorants and antiperspirants have been mainstays in our daily routines for years, helping us stay fresh and confident. However, as the spotlight on healthier living becomes more prominent, questions about the products we use on our bodies have become more pressing.
It’s essential to understand the reasons behind the growing trend of switching to natural deodorants and the potential drawbacks of conventional options.
Health Concerns
Conventional deodorants often contain a cocktail of synthetic chemicals, including aluminum compounds, parabens, and artificial fragrances. While these ingredients serve the purpose of reducing odor and sweat, they have raised alarm bells within the health and wellness community. Some studies suggest that aluminum, in particular, may be linked to health issues, including breast cancer and Alzheimer’s disease. Although the scientific consensus is inconclusive, the uncertainty alone is reason enough for many to seek alternatives.
Moreover, the skin under our arms is exceptionally absorbent, making it a gateway for these potentially harmful chemicals to enter our bodies. This is especially concerning, as we often apply deodorant immediately after shaving, a practice that can cause irritation or even more significant health concerns when using conventional products.
Environmental Impact
Beyond personal health considerations, the production and disposal of conventional deodorants also come with environmental implications. The manufacturing process often involves resource-intensive procedures and the release of greenhouse gases. In addition, the plastic packaging of most deodorants contributes to the ever-growing issue of plastic pollution, with many containers ending up in landfills or the oceans.
To address these concerns and embrace a lifestyle that is both mindful of personal well-being and the planet, many individuals are making the switch to natural deodorants. These alternatives typically feature plant-based ingredients, are free from harmful additives, and come in eco-friendly packaging, aligning with the principles of sustainability and clean living.
Overview of Native vs Schmidt’s Deodorants
Native Deodorant is a natural deodorant brand that prides itself on its commitment to clean ingredients. Their deodorants are aluminum-free, paraben-free, and sulfate-free. Native Deodorant is known for its wide range of enticing scents that cater to both men and women. The brand has a smooth, easy-to-apply formula that glides on the skin and leaves no residue.
On the other hand, Schmidt’s is a vegan and cruelty-free natural deodorant brand that uses baking soda and arrowroot powder to combat unwanted odors. Schmidt’s is known for its award-winning odor protection and is available in a variety of scents. The brand offers both stick and jar formulations to cater to different preferences.
Native Deodorant vs Schmidt’s Showdown: The Test of of 24hrs
In order to really test these brands head to head, we decided to give them a try at the same time. We decided to use both deodorants at the same time, Native deodorant one on the right armpit, and Schmidt’s on the left. This truly gave a us sense of which one protected us for longer, had better lasting scent, and provided the least irritation. The results were intriguing!
Native vs Schmidt’s:
Ingredients comparison
When it comes to choosing a natural deodorant, it’s essential to pay attention to the ingredients. Native Deodorant and Schmidt’s both use natural ingredients, but their formulations differ slightly.
Native Deodorant uses a blend of natural ingredients such as coconut oil, shea butter, and probiotics to combat odor-causing bacteria. The brand also uses baking soda in some of its formulations to provide extra odor protection. However, Native Deodorant also offers a baking soda-free option for customers who are sensitive to baking soda.
Schmidt’s, on the other hand, uses baking soda and arrowroot powder as its primary odor-fighting ingredients. The brand also uses coconut oil, shea butter, and candelilla wax to provide a smooth and easy-to-apply formula. They also offer a baking soda free version.
What We Found: Ingredients and First Impressions
At first the two deodorants seem to be similar in consistency. They both have a chalky but smooth feel when cool, very similar to generic lady speed stick, yet more natural feeling like baking soda. Native did feel more creamy to the touch when first experienced. Schmidt’s was more chalky.
The Native deodorant had much more fragrance and sweetness, while Schmidt’s was pleasantly fragranced but did not resemble the ‘clean coconut scent’ that we tested. To us it smelled more like lime than coconut.
After application, Schmidt’s deodorant was much more creamy, probably due to the combination of the wax, jojoba, and she butter. The Schmidt’s deodorant did leave white marks, whereas the Native deodorant did not. Native deodorant went on smooth but without feeling so wet. Both deodorants gilded onto skin easily, unlike other natural deodorants that we have tired.
Note: The consistency of both Native and Schmidt’s deodorants change slightly with the seasons and the ambient temperature of the room. Schmidt’s deodorant was harder to raise in the tube in cool temperatures and we found it got stuck until it was warmed.

Native Deodorant has gained a loyal following due to its effective odor control and clean ingredients. Customers have reported that the deodorant keeps them feeling fresh and confident throughout the day. However, some customers have reported that the deodorant doesn’t last as long as they would like, especially during intense activities.

Schmidt’s 12 Hr. Effectiveness and Customer Reviews
Schmidt’s has also gained a loyal following due to its effective odor protection and natural ingredients. Customers have reported that the deodorant keeps them feeling fresh and confident throughout the day, even during intense activities. However, some customers have reported skin irritation due to the baking soda content in some of the formulations.
One of the benefits of Schmidt’s is its availability in both stick and jar formulations. Customers can choose the formulation that best suits their preferences. The brand also offers a fragrance-free option for customers who prefer unscented deodorants.
SCHMIDT’S VS NATIVE
What We Found: The 12 hr Test
Native deodorants’ scent lasted the full 12 hr test. Schmidt’s deodorant still had a subtle smell after 12 hours, yet the skin felt smooth and dry (in a good way). Both deodorants absorbed sweat during a workout very well, but the Native deodorant scent was even more prominent while sweating. Schmidt’s deodorant could still be felt on the skin after 12 hours (a dry chalky feel without residue), while Native deodorant was absorbed into the skin with only the scent being apparent after the full 12 hour test.
Overall, they were both able to stand the test 12 hours.
Native vs Schmidt’s:
Pricing and Availability
When it comes to pricing, Native Deodorant seems to be consistently higher priced than Schmidt’s. Both Schmidt’s and Native are becoming more accessible in mainstream drugstores and grocery stores, yet the availability of the scents may differ depending on your location. Both brands can easily be found on Amazon, yet not all scents seem to be available on Amazon.
Native Deodorant often has seasonal scents that are only sold for a limited time. The brand offers free shipping on orders over a certain amount. Customers can also take advantage of the brand’s subscription service, which offers a discount on recurring orders.
Schmidt’s is also available online and in some retail stores. The brand sells products in bulk, which can further save money in the long run. Unfortunately, with Schmidt’s, when buying in bulk you have to keep to the same scent, whereas with Native, you can mix and match or buy a variety pack.
Native vs. Schmidt’s: Additional Features and Product Variations
In the world of natural deodorants, the options often extend beyond just scent and efficacy. Both Native and Schmidt’s offer additional features and product variations that cater to different preferences and needs. Let’s explore what sets these two brands apart in terms of their product variations and any unique features they bring to the table.
Native’s Array of Scents and Sensations: Native, well-known for its wide array of delightful scents, offers a diverse selection to suit various preferences. From classics like Lavender & Rose to unique offerings like Coconut & Vanilla or Sandalwood & Lemon, you’ll find a fragrance that aligns with your personal tastes. Native also offers seasonal scents, which can be a refreshing change with the changing seasons.
Schmidt’s Special Ingredients: Schmidt’s, on the other hand, is celebrated for its unique ingredient combinations. The brand combines natural ingredients such as baking soda, arrowroot powder, and shea butter to create deodorants that not only fight odor but also provide skin-nourishing benefits. For example, their Rose & Vanilla formula combines these ingredients for a luxurious and effective product.

Schmidt’s, for instance, offers deodorant sticks in glass containers, promoting a reduced environmental footprint. Native, on the other hand, offers plastic-free options, taking a step further in the journey towards sustainable living.
Sensitive Skin Formulations: If you have sensitive skin, you’ll appreciate that both brands offer sensitive skin variations. These options are free from baking soda, which can sometimes cause skin irritation, making them suitable for those with more delicate skin.
Seasonal Releases: Native introduces seasonal scents, giving you the opportunity to switch up your deodorant experience throughout the year. These limited-edition scents can add a touch of excitement to your daily routine.
Conclusion Native vs Schmidt’s:
Which brand provides the longest-lasting odor protection?
What We Found: The Winner
When it comes to choosing between Native Deodorant and Schmidt’s, both brands offer effective odor protection and clean ingredients. However, based on our research and user experience, Schmidt’s leaves more residue and white transfer onto clothing than Native does.
Native’s scents are much stronger, so anyone wanting to reduce their toxic load from fragrance may prefer Schmidt’s since it is a more subtle smell. However, someone with strong body odor may appreciate Native’s stronger scents.
Packaging is important too. We love the plastic-free applicator that Native has to offer. Schmidt’s paste in a jar is good for some users who are used to this type of application.
AND THE WINNER IS…NATIVE! If you’re looking for a natural deodorant that provides long-lasting odor protection, NATIVE is the way to go. However, if you are sensitive to scents, or prefer to apply as a paste, Schmidt’s might be better for you.
Final Thoughts and Recommendations
Choosing a natural deodorant can be challenging, but it’s essential to pay attention to the ingredients and odor protection claims. Both Native Deodorant and Schmidt’s use natural ingredients and offer effective odor protection. However, based on our research, NATIVE provides the most benefits and better user experience despite the slight price increase, although it’s essential to choose the brand that suits your preferences and needs.
It’s also important to note that transitioning to a natural deodorant may take some time. Your body may need time to adjust to the new formula, and you may experience some odor during the transition period. However, with patience and persistence, you can switch to a natural deodorant that works for you.
