Most Important Aspects to Consider When Searching for an Eco-Friendly Electric Toothbrush

When it comes to finding the perfect eco-friendly electric toothbrush, several crucial factors should be on your radar:

1. Power Source

When seeking the most eco-friendly electric toothbrush, the power source plays a significant role. Opt for toothbrushes with rechargeable batteries that hold longer charges, reducing the need for disposable batteries that harm the environment.

2. Length of Battery Charge

The battery’s lifespan is crucial for environmental reasons. A longer-lasting battery means less frequent charging, conserving energy and extending the battery’s overall life.

3. Recycling Program

Consider whether the toothbrush manufacturer offers a recycling program for toothbrush heads. Such programs indicate the company’s commitment to sustainability and environmental responsibility.

4. Zero Waste Packaging

Ensure the packaging of your new eco-friendly electric toothbrush is biodegradable or recyclable. Avoid plastic packaging that may not be accepted in municipal recycling programs. Companies like Georganics are known for their exceptional zero-waste packaging.

5. Bristle Composition

Many toothbrushes still feature nylon bristles, which are environmentally unfriendly. Look for innovative alternatives such as bristles made from castor bean oil, silicone, boar hair, or bamboo charcoal fibers for a more eco-conscious choice.

6. Frequency of Head Replacement

Choosing a toothbrush with infrequent head replacements is key to minimizing waste and energy consumption, making it a truly eco-friendly option.

Other Considerations When Selecting an Eco-Friendly Electric Toothbrush

An eco-friendly electric toothbrush can make a lasting impact on your environmental footprint. Here are some additional factors to consider:

7. Timer

A built-in timer can help you maintain proper brushing habits by indicating when to switch brush positions and when you’ve brushed for the recommended time. Look for a toothbrush with this feature if it aligns with your needs.

8. Decibels

Consider the noise level of the toothbrush, especially if you need to brush quietly. Check the product description for information on decibels to ensure a peaceful brushing experience.

9. Brush Strokes per Minute

Sonic electric toothbrushes can provide up to 30,000 brushstrokes per minute, far surpassing manual brushes. More brushstrokes per area lead to a cleaner surface. Choose a toothbrush with a brush stroke rate that suits your preferences.

10. Additional Tech Features

Aside from eco-friendliness, think about other features like handle ergonomics, tech features (e.g., Bluetooth capabilities), and how the toothbrush feels during use. Some toothbrushes can connect to smartphone apps, providing real-time feedback and brushing analytics.

Selecting an eco-friendly electric toothbrush is not just about dental care but also about contributing to a sustainable future with reduced resource consumption and waste. Make your choice wisely, and it could be the last toothbrush you ever need.

The Top 10 Best Eco-Friendly Toothbrushes

#1 Best Overall: Foreo ISSA 2

The design of this electric toothbrush is a feature that is the most unique out of all of the brushes we found.  The way this brush feels in your hand and in your mouth makes the experience of brushing very appealing.  The sleek ergonomic look of the toothbrush adds to the allure of this brush as well.

This brush wins the award for gentleness on the gums.  People who often experience bleeding gums with other electric toothbrushes, have found the ISSA 2 to be the gentlest brush on the market–giving gums a little massage.  Vibrations on the brush are also adjustable (8 speeds), allowing those with very sensitive gums to lessen the pressure if required.

A two-minute timer is built into the ISSA 2 with 30 second pulse intervals. This is helpful because it tells you when to change your brush position.  The vibrations on this brush are also quieter than most, giving your partner a little more sleep while you brush.

Green Footprint

Another thing that we really liked about the Issa 2, is the fact that it is almost completely made from silicone, from the handle to the bristles on the brush.  Silicone is more eco-friendly than plastic or nylon bristles because it is developed as a by-product of silica found in sand, rather than fossil fuels used in the manufacturing of nylon and plastics.

Silicone is also always BPA free, and is very durable.  The durability adds to its green score, since you won’t require a replacement as soon as some other brushes.  Silicone is also more bacteria resistant and as a result only needs a brush-head change once per year.

The company advertises a battery life lasting as long as 6 months to a year, but from our experience, battery life was much less than that (around 3 months on average).  Battery life is still a lot longer than most electric toothbrushes on the market.

Another eco-advantage with the ISSA 2 is that there is no charging dock, requiring less plastic and additional pieces.  The USB cord included will charge the unit in 2 hours or less.  It also does not come with an additional USB plug attachment, so you can use the same one that you use to charge your phone.

Missed the Mark

We feel that the Foreo ISSA 2 could be improved in a few ways:

  • Customers have complained about the ability to find Bristle Brush replacements at the 1 yr mark.
  • The large brush head takes some time to get used to and may hinder the ability to clean the last molars–the ISSA mini head may be required for small mouths.
  • The price is high.

#2 Most Connected: Oral B io Series 7

The best features of the Oral B iO Series 7 lie in the indicators and connectivity that this brush can offer.  A 2 minute timer, standard on most brushes these days, also comes with pulses every 30 seconds to change brushing location.   Brush strokes are all recorded in the app, and visually detailed after your brushing session.

The charge on this brush lasts much longer than previous models, but is still much less than other models on our list coming in at around 10-14 days per charge.  The unit has a magnetic base, allowing it to stand up safely when charging.

The brush construction is made mostly from plastic, but the units are well designed and are built to last, allowing for greater sustainability requiring fewer replacements throughout the years.  The two year warranty starts the day you purchase the brush.  The company will replace it free of charge if defective during that time.

The handle feels nice in your hand, is sleek and does not slip out of your hand when wet.  The light indicators are found in easy-to-see places, giving this toothbrush even more value.  The one thing that keeps coming up as a bone of contention is the very high price and the cost and frequency  of brush replacement heads(every 3 months).

Those with sensitive gums can use one of the 5 modes, including the sensitive brush mode.  The brush will also give you a red indicator light when you’re brushing too hard.   We have found that users LOVE the clean, professional feeling they get after every session.

Green Footprint

Oral B has come a long way with its green footprint.  This company has taken the initiative to reduce carbon emissions by using renewable energy, innovating products with less plastics, and creating a free and easy recycling program for all Crest and Oral B products.  All brushes, and brush heads can be recycled using the Oral B recycling program.

The packaging needs to be improved in order to fit to a green standard.  The black plastic insert is not recyclable in most areas and will end up in landfill.  We have yet to hear back from the company to see if we can send this insert to their recycling facility.

Missed the Mark

We feel that the Oral B iO could be improved in a few ways:

  • Price
  • Charging base could be replaced with a international USB cord reducing the need for plastic
  • Packaging could come in 100% recyclable cardboard without black plastic

#3 Best Travel Brush:  Quip Sonic Brush

There has been a lot of hype over the Quip Toothbrush throughout the years.  This brush wins the award as Best Travel Brush because of its slim design and thin travel case.  The Quip is a sonic brush, outputting 15 000 vibrations per minute, which some people like much better than the 35 000 vibration brushes, saying that it is less of a “Jackhammer” brush than some of the other ones.  The Quip has very gentle bristles and is great for those who have sensitive teeth or bleeding gums.

This is a great minimalist brush with only one power setting.  The brush head is slightly larger than many brushes on the market, so if you have a small mouth, you may need to order the child size brush head which can easily fit on the adult base.  Some users have complained about the size of the brush.

The brush has a 2 minute timer with 30 second pulsation intervals.  It lacks a sensitivity monitor, and does not connect to an app.  The cost of this brush ranges around $40, and can be significantly less costly on an annual basis with a subscription service.

Green Footprint

The brush has a good reputation for longevity, needing less replacements throughout the years which is a good eco-friendly benefit.  The brush is powered by one AAA battery which lasts around 3 months.  Unfortunately, this feature is not great environmentally, yet travel enthusiasts would benefit from this feature.

The brush head is recommended to be changed every 3 months, yet the company does not have a recycling program.  If you choose to recycle these brush heads, you would have to find a private recycling facility, something that we believe most people would probably not do.

We found the packaging to be a little wasteful, arriving in a mailer foil-like unrecyclable plastic.  The box itself is recyclable as long as you don’t order the black one, and the inner inserts are also recyclable when not in black.

The price point for this toothbrush is below industry average, and adds to the sustainability making it more affordable and accessible.  A subscription for this brush will save you a lot of money over a 1-2 year period.

Missed the Mark

We feel that the Quip Brush could be improved in a few ways:

  • The single sonic setting of 15 000 vibrations could have been improved by adding another higher power setting.
  • The mailer packaging could come in recyclable packaging.
  • The disposable battery is not eco-friendly

#4 Best Eco Bundle: Boka Brush Bundle

We liked the Boka brush not only because it works effectively as a sonic toothbrush but also because of the array of natural products that the company offers.  The charcoal activated brushes are said to reduce bacteria growth.  The brushes are tailored at the tips to increase reach into hard to hit areas.

The Boka brush comes with three power levels, ranging up to 30 000 vibrations per minute.  This is a great feature for anyone who has sensitive areas in the mouth but enjoys the stronger brush strokes at times.

The brush has a great feel in the hand, with its matte white finish and an easy to grip handle.  The brush comes with a USB magnetic charger which stands well on the base, yet takes a while to charge fully.  The charge will last 25 days.

The brush has a 2 minute timer with 30 second pulsation intervals.  It lacks a sensitivity monitor, and does not connect to an app.  The Boka brush has a subscription service available, yet sends out two brush heads at a time, which may result in having more brush heads than you can use.   Subscribing for a year and then cancelling, may be the best option to give you enough brush heads for two years.

The Boka brush comes in packaging which has a foam insert which is not recyclable.  We hope that the company can improve this feature.  The box itself can be recycled.

The brush heads do not have a recycling program, and the charcoal bristles are still largely made of nylon, and need to be sent to a private recycling facility to be recycled.  The brush head is recommended to be changed every 3 months and is only compatible with BOKA brush refills.

The price point for this toothbrush is industry average, and adds to the sustainability making it affordable and accessible.

Missed the Mark

We feel that the Boka Brush could be improved in a few ways:

  • Foam packaging should be avoided
  • Bristles are still made of nylon
  • Brush does not have a pressure sensor

#5 Best Quiet Brush: Brüush

The Brüush Brush is a cool brush on a few fronts:  its handle is long and sleek, the Brüush comes in a few fun colors, and it is the quietest brush we have looked into.  The carrying case is sleek and since it can keep a charge for 4 weeks, it is not necessary to bring the base on most trips.

The Brüush has six modes, yet we found that you will most likely utilize the “daily” feature most often.  The maximum stroke speed is 31 000 strokes per minute, which we have found to be industry standard for a sonic brush.

The Brüush has a 2 minute timer with 30 second pulsation intervals.  It lacks a sensitivity monitor, and does not connect to an app.  The Brüush has a subscription service available and will send you 3 heads every 6 months for $18.  Brüush heads can be replaced with their Brüush heads only, bought solely on their own site.

We found that the unique Brüush zig zag bristle heads are useful for better cleaning than a straight across brush head.  It left our teeth feeling clean like the dentist!

Sustainability Features

Green Footprint

When it comes to environmentality, the Brüush’s best features lie in its 25-day charge and quality manufacturing.  We feel that Brüush could have improved its sustainable design to make this a more eco-friendly choice.

The packaging makes for a noble unboxing experience, but not much in terms of eco-friendly design.  The best thing about the packaging is that you could easily reuse the box for goods around your house, since it’s sturdy and sleek looking.

The Brüush heads are plastic and need to be recycled every 2 months.  You will have to find your own private recycling facility, since Brüush does not offer a recycling program.  We found this to be unsustainable towards the environment since most standard brush heads can withstand use for 3 months or longer.

Missed the Mark

We feel that Brüush could be improved in a few ways:

  • Foam packaging should be avoided
  • Brush heads need to be replaced every 2 months
  • Brüush should offer a recycling program given the huge environmental footprint of having to change the brush heads more often.

#6 Best for Kids: Foreo ISSA Kids

This brush is perfect for kids or anyone with a small mouth that finds the ISSA 2 a little large.  The brush comes with the same great sustainable features as the ISSA 2 but in the kid version.   The handle has a fun, sleek design.  The colors come in pink, blue, yellow, and purple.  The thick handle makes it easy for kids to hold.

This silicon brush is gentle on gums and offers additional antibacterial properties compared with the standard silicon bristles.

A two-minute timer is built into the ISSA kids with 30 second pulse intervals. This is helpful because it tells your child when to change the brush position.  The vibrations on this brush are also quieter than most.  The charger is a USB cable that can easily be plugged into any USB phone cube.  We liked this feature because it does not rely on a charging base or create additional plastic products in the form of a charging base.

Green Footprint

The same green footprint applies to the ISSA kids as well as the ISSA 2.  The brush head is made from silicone.

The brush heads need to be replaced once per year–the longest of any brush we found on the market.    Silicone is also more bacteria resistant.  Something that is important when we think about the health of our children.

Battery life holds the longest charge of any other child brush on the market at 265 days.

Another eco-advantage with the ISSA kids is that there is no charging dock, requiring less plastic and additional pieces.  The USB cord included will charge the unit in 2 hours or less.  It also does not come with an additional USB plug attachment, so you can use the same one that you use to charge your phone.

Missed the Mark

We feel that the Foreo ISSA Kids could be improved in a few ways:

  • Customers have complained about the ability to find Bristle Brush replacements at the 1 yr mark.
  • The price is high.
  • Only 1 power setting for the Kid version

#7 Best 2-Pack: Oral B 2-Pack Smart Series

The Smart Series brushes come with a  small targeted brush head and a charging base.  Many dentists and users prefer the small rotating bristles to the sonic brushes, claiming that they clean better and remove plaque better than the competitors.

The Smart Series comes equipped with bluetooth and app connectivity, which is a great feature for those who have many cavities and need guidance with their brushing technique.   They have a battery indicator which is helpful to know if you will need the charging base or not.

Six modes of brush strokes can be accessed on the pink brush, while 5 can be accessed on the silver brush.  There is a two-minute timer built-in and a pressure sensor to tell you if you are brushing too hard.  The brushes also provide a 30 second pulsation to notify you to change brushing positions.  The brush will light up red if you are pressing too hard, this feature is great for anyone with sensitive gums.

Green Footprint

Oral B continues to impress as a green and eco-friendly company.  The Smart Series brushes have plenty of great features, come in recyclable packaging, and brush heads can be sent back to the manufacturer for recycling.

The charge on this brush lasts around 12 days of regular use.  We feel that this is a bit on the low end, but still provides enough charge for a short trip.

We love that Oral B will take back any of your oral hygiene products with their recycling program.  The original packaging is wasteful with its styrofoam insert. Most users find that the brush heads last longer than 3 months.

Oral B recommends that we unplug the charging base when not in use to make sure that power is not being wasted.

Missed the Mark

We feel that the could be improved in a few ways:

  • Styrofoam should be avoided in the packaging.
  • Brush could be built to last longer than 12 days

#8 Best Solar Powered Brush: Soladay

The Soladey Solar-Powered Toothbrush is a revolutionary dental care device that harnesses the power of the sun for eco-friendly oral hygiene. Unlike traditional electric toothbrushes, the Soladey doesn’t rely on batteries or charging bases, making it a standout choice for sustainability enthusiasts.

The Soladey Solar-Powered Toothbrush is an eco-friendly dental care solution that uses the power of the sun to keep your smile radiant. With no need for disposable batteries or frequent replacements, it’s a sustainable choice for those who prioritize environmental responsibility. Its minimal packaging and long-lasting design further support a greener approach to dental hygiene. If you’re seeking a solar-powered smile and a reduced carbon footprint, the Soladey toothbrush is an excellent choice.

Missed the Mark

  • Limited Features: The Soladey toothbrush may not offer the advanced features found in some electric toothbrushes, such as timers, pressure sensors, or various cleaning modes. For users who value these high-tech capabilities, the Soladey might not be the ideal choice.
  • Brush Head Options: While the Soladey promotes eco-friendliness by reducing waste, it may benefit from offering a range of brush head options with different bristle materials. This would cater to a wider audience and allow users to select bristle types that best suit their dental needs.

#9 Best Value Brush: Oral B Pro 300

If you don’t need all of the bells and whistles, this is the brush for you.  Durable and effective, the spinning bristles clean with precision.  This brush has all of the necessary features, such as a 2 minute timer with 30 second pulses, 1 power-mode, and a charge that last about a week.

We found the brush cleans very well, and we like Oral B’s eco-friendly foundation behind their brushes.  The charging base on the Oral B units continue to be a bit of an annoyance for some, since they gunk up toothpaste at the bottom of the base.

We feel that the charge could last a little longer, requiring less power than its current model.  The charging base is something that we feel all electric toothbrushes should phase out in favor of a universal USB charger.  This would reduce the need for additional plastic on the earth.

This brush is priced well and makes for a sustainable long-term choice.

Missed the Mark

We feel that the Oral B Pro 1000 could be improved in a few ways:

  • Charging base could be replaced with a international USB cord reducing the need for plastic
  • Packaging could come in 100% recyclable cardboard without styrofoam

#10 Most Eco Packaging: Georganics Sonic Toothbrush

What we loved about this brush was the green philosophy behind it.  The packaging is plastic free, and the brush itself is fully recyclable.  Despite the nylon bristles, Georganics even has a recycling program for the brush heads.

The charge on this toothbrush is above industry standards, lasting around 5 weeks.  The brush comes with a UK plug charging base.  This was a bit of a disappointment since we feel that it could have replaced this with a USB cable in order to reduce plastic and make charging more internationally available with the different sockets found around the world.

The Georganics sonic brush gives you a good clean feeling with a vibrating stroke speed of 35 000 strokes/minute.  The brush has three settings, and getting to the high setting takes a bit of getting used to.

The electric toothbrush comes with a 2 minute timer, with pulses every 30 seconds to tell you when to switch brushing positions.  This is a handy feature found in many of the top brushes we surveyed.

Green Footprint

The company’s green philosophy and wide-array of additional eco-friendly products makes this toothbrush the most environmental choice.  The company also sells many zero-waste products, such as dental floss, toothpaste, and mouthwash tablets.  They aim to be  a go-to source for the green consumer.

The packaging is the best we have seen from any electric toothbrush on the market.

The price point for this toothbrush is industry average, and adds to the sustainability making it more affordable and accessible.

Missed the Mark

We feel that the Georganics Sonic Toothbrush could be improved in a few ways:

  • Vibrations can be a little too forceful for some brushers.
  • Charging base could be replaced with a international USB cord
